Duke University Health System has named Dr. Craig Albanese as its next CEO.
Albanese will move into the top position at the end of March. He will succeed Dr. A. Eugene Washington, who announced in the fall plans to step down June 30 from his leadership roles, which include president of Duke University Health System and chancellor for health affairs at Duke University.
Albanese has served as executive vice president and chief operating officer since joining the Durham, North Carolina-based health system just over a year ago. Albanese previously was group senior vice president and chief medical officer of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He has also served in senior leadership roles at Stanford University, including vice president of quality and performance improvement at Stanford Children’s Health.
Duke University Health System operates three hospitals, more than 200 clinics, additional clinical affiliate hospitals and a network of community hospitals that are part of Duke Lifepoint. The health system employs more than 23,000 full-time staff, and reported nearly 67,000 inpatient admissions and nearly 4.7 million outpatient visits in fiscal year 2021.
