Ron Rittenmeyer, former chairman and CEO of the for-profit hospital chain Tenet Healthcare, died Oct. 11. He was 75 years old.
Rittenmeyer stepped down as chairman Oct. 1 for unspecified health reasons. Bob Kerrey, former U.S. senator (D-Neb.) and lead director at Tenet, took his place as chairman. Kerrey, 79, served as Nebraska’s governor before winning his Senate seat.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ron Rittenmeyer, a dear friend and colleague,” a Tenet spokesperson said in a statement. “Ron’s commitment to advancing health care will have a lasting impact on Tenet Healthcare and the communities we serve. Our thoughts are with the Rittenmeyer family, and we are respecting their request for privacy.”
Rittenmeyer was CEO of the 61-hospital Tenet from 2017 to 2021, when he was replaced by Dr. Saum Sutaria, the Dallas-based company’s former chief operating officer.
Tenet, which also operates the ambulatory surgery center subsidiary United Surgical Partners International and the revenue-cycle subsidiary Conifer Health Solutions, reported $915 million in net income in 2021, up from $399 million in 2020. It received $205 million in COVID-19 relief grants in 2021 and $899 million in 2020.
The health system has been selling acute-care hospitals in its smaller markets and steadily acquiring ambulatory surgery centers.
